The Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this work could seem more like a difficult scholarly challenge rather than a new pop project from an artist who just had a last single featured a global K-pop star. Broken across 4 different movements and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged album investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, often via the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists look quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, with full praise going to the artist. While this is not the first time project to fuse the past and modern styles, its scale are much higher here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart apart, you still want to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes down like cartoonish impact. The track then segues into the frenetic track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never quite understand—nor wish to predict—what it is going to next."

Nearly each song finishes at a completely different place from where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused style begins out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key achievement on the album involves navigating the gap of bold innovation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that the album has achieved her first work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies as it spirals upward. That feat gets echoed by another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a storybook character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its inherent excess. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
