Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile New President.
After a definitive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Known for his strong Catholic views and regard for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely built on promises to address growing insecurity and radically restrict migration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he delivered an stern warning for them to leave before the inauguration or face expulsion.

However, other analysts further describe it as a part of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Strong Majority
Despite his decisive electoral win, Kast is not expected to have an clear majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are combined together.
This political reality might hinder his plans, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to provided specifics.
